SEAN MEILAK

Sean Meilak produces paintings, videos, photographs and installation works. These different formats stem from a particular art making process. Sean uses friends and acquaintances as models, posing them with the precision of an advertising director. He records this with photos and videos, involving a number of people with specialist skills.

After casting, directing and recording the shoot, Meilak enters the studio. From the photos and video he selects particular images for exhibition. He paints beautiful gouache pictures of the people as he has posed them. He frames selected photos and edits video footage into soap opera like DVDs. This furthers Sean's aim of creating a world of impossible beauty, community and lifestyle. The idea of young individuals who epitomise ‘leisure' is taken up in these works and shown to be impossibly seductive, but ultimately untrue.

Sean's work first came to prominence in the mid-1990s, when he was involved with 1st Floor, an artist-run gallery in Melbourne. Since then, he has been included in numerous exhibitions in Australia and overseas. Recently his work has featured in Swoon at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Southern: Ten Australian Artists at the Home Gallery in Prague and Pitch Your Own Tent at the Monash University Museum of Art.
