Fiona Foley: Forbidden, is the first major survey exhibition of the artist's practice from 1994 to the present.
Currently showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney until 31 January 2010, the exhibition will then move to the University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane from 19 February to 2 May 2010. A fabulous monograph, jointly produced by the MCA and UQAM to accompany the exhibition, contains essays and images which not only reflect the photographic, video, installation and print works in the exhibition, but also other important aspects and elements of Foley's artistic practice including public artwork, sculptures and painting. The publication is available from our bookshop. Please contact the gallery for details.
There is still time to see the exhibition of work by Rick Amor at McClelland, curated by Robert Lindsay.
Penumbra, an atmospheric installation of work by Rick Amor, creates a Romantic otherworld of the imagination where enigmatic creatures and out-of-scale figures are both strangely familiar but curiously different. Surrounded by dramatic mural scale black and white drawings a tableau of Rick Amor's mysterious and exotic bronze figures emerge into the moody half-light of the exhibition space. Through this exhibition the emotional aura that underpins Rick Amor's art is created, the sense of disquiet and intrigue underlies the ambiguous narrative of the observer and the observed.

Noel McKenna is a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. His portrait of his son, Emil, is minimal and shows the type of quirky humour and pathos for which this artist is renowned.

Gunter Christmann's work will feature in the group show Song of Sirens at The Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne.
Gunter's work will show alongside works by Stephen Bram, Ms & Mr, Kate Murphy and Paul Ogier.
"Song of sirens takes us intoxicatingly close to the imaginative workings of five multigenerational artists. Ms & Mr construct magical spaces and conflate time; Kate Murphy seeks a psychic’s authority in her video self-portrait; Paul Ogier builds photographs of enigmatic landscapes; Gunter Christmann particularizes the relationships between things in his ‘water tank’ paintings; and Stephen Bram takes possession of the entire south gallery for his new architectural construction based on three-point perspective."
Song of Sirens will run from 24 Feb 2009 to 03 May 2009

It was all hands-on-deck installing Martin Parr's recent show at Niagara. Martin took photographs at both Melbourne Cup Day and Oaks Day, and offered a stunning social commentary on what it means to attend 'a day at the races'.

His work is a scale model of the Museum itself, created from cardboard, Ikea products and various calligraphy brushes and materials from the local art shop. It also includes surveillance cameras and monitors showing, in real time, viewers interacting with his work in the museum space, and a rotating montage of images of his earlier artworks. Power And Beauty, Indigenous Art Now, features the work of leading Australian artist, Fiona Foley. This major exhibition, curated by Judith Ryan, Senior Curator, Indigenous Art, National Gallery of Victoria is on at the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Power And Beauty, Indigenous Art Now runs from 17 November – 10 March, Heide III: Central Galleries.
Extracted from Heide's catalogue notes, "Loss of land, loss of language, denial of citizenship rights and the huge impact of stolen generation legislation on a large percentage of the Indigenous population have scarred the Indigenous community at large. These issues lie at the heart of five seminal works from the last two decades – by artists Fiona Foley, Lin Onus, Ray Thomas and Gordon Hookey – which together acknowledge the strength and tenacity of pioneering city-based artists whose work is a form of political activism."
It's Christmas time which means Niagara will be closing it's doors to the public from the 15th of December 2007. We are busily preparing for the year ahead and already have lots planned! Please make sure to come along to what will be a brilliant show of Song Ling and Angelina Pwerle's new works. We hope that you will join the artists for opening drinks on Tuesday 15 January 2008 from 6.00pm.
Many thanks to all that continue to come along to our shows and support Niagara Galleries.
We looking forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Rick Amor has been selected to participate in ‘50’ – A Print Exchange Portfolio, with works displayed at Geelong Gallery until 27 January 2008.
A ‘print exchange portfolio’ involves the creation of a print edition (determined by the number of participants, in this case, 50) which is then collated into a portfolio for distribution to each of the participants. Each was invited to create a new print – working in the printmaking technique of their choice and without the restrictions of a prescribed theme. The size of the paper was pre-determined, measuring 25 x 25 cm and each participant was asked to complete an edition of fifty plus two artist’s proofs – one framed for exhibition (and return to the artist) and another to be gifted to Geelong Gallery’s permanent collection.
The work of Richard Larter is featured in the exhibition Andy Warhol and Oz: Parallel Visions, presented by the Andy Warhol Museum and the National Gallery of Australia. In this exhibition, the works of seven prominent Australian artists influenced by the work of Andy Warhol are shown, including Martin Sharp, Robert Rooney, Tracey Moffat, Juan Davila, Fiona Hall and Tim Horn.
Andy and Oz is a curatorial collaboration between the National Gallery of Australia's Curator, Dr. Deborah Hart and The Andy Warhol Museum's Director, Thomas Sokolowski. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the National Gallery of Australia's 25th birthday celebrations.
Andy and Oz: Parallel Visions runs from 20 October – 30 December 2007 at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, coinciding with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Australia Festival.
Rick Amor wins McClelland Award for Sculpture, McClelland Sculpture Survey 2007 – November 2007
Undoubtedly a master of many media, Rick Amor has been awarded the prestigious McClelland Award for Sculpture. Rick graciously accepted the award from Dame Elisabeth Murdoch and her grandson, Lachlan, at McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park on Saturday 18 November 2008. The artist and Niagara Galleries have announced that they will donate the proceeds of the $100,000 prize to Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute and the Royal Melbourne Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, in appreciation for their lifesaving work.

The judge of the award, Chris Saines, Director of Auckland Art Gallery, said that the decision was an easy one. Cast from bronze (on a corten steel base) and standing over two metres tall, Amor's outstanding winning piece, Relic 2006, can be seen alongside the other 35 finalists’ work at McClelland Gallery until 6 July 2008.
Congratulations Rick!

Yvonne Kendall was announced winner of the $10,000 acquistive prize for her sculpture Passengers 2007 (below), constructed from curtain material, string and glue.

Judges John McPhee and Laura Back remarked, "... The winning work is tough, makes no attempt to be cute or pretty and concerns itself with personal as well as broader issues. In using non-traditional materials the artist gives the work an unexpected quality (...) Undoubtedby, (it is) the work of an experienced sculptor, who is sure of her ability to create a strong statement."
The exhibition is open to the public from Saturday October 20 to Sunday November 28 at the Woollahra Council Chambers, 536 New South Head Road, Double Bay, Sydney. 9am–4pm daily.
Congratulations Yvonne!

John Kelly Deconstructing Australia, curated by Robert Lindsay 17 December-–29 April 2007, is the second in a series of sculpture exhibitions in the grounds of the McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park . This outdoor exhibition Deconstructing Australia consists of a series of monumental abstracted steel elements which are derived and developed from truncated sections of the Australia Council's logo. The logo consists of a stylized kangaroo and circular sun motif.
John Kelly in the spirit of Post Modernism, takes various fragments of the logo which he sections off and abstracts into massive monoliths. These superbly sublime constructions, through their intriguing arrangement, form an enigmatic visual landscape within the natural landscape.
